APS4 Resume Guide: Stepping Up From Entry-Level

APS4 is where you move from learning the work to delivering it with some discretion. You start coordinating across colleagues, applying judgment within defined parameters, and identifying issues to escalate. The jump from APS3 to APS4 is mostly about confidence, judgment, and reliability — and the resume needs to show those specifically.

APS4 salary range

Approximately A$73,000 – A$82,000 per year (Commonwealth APS4, 2026 indicative).

What an APS4 actually does

APS4 officers exercise discretion within defined parameters, coordinate across team members, identify issues and escalate them appropriately, and provide some advisory support to colleagues and external customers. They handle moderately complex casework, prepare drafts that go to APS5+ for review, and start to take ownership of process improvements.

What hiring panels weight at APS4

  • "Coordinated" — APS4 is a coordinating band. Show concrete examples of coordinating people, processes, or workflows.
  • Judgment within parameters. Evidence that you've made decisions, not just followed instructions.
  • Issue identification and escalation. Show you spot problems and bring them to the right person at the right time.
  • Customer or stakeholder service. APS4 often has external-facing elements; concrete service-quality evidence helps.
  • Process improvement, even small. Did you suggest a better way of doing something that was adopted?

Weak vs strong: APS4 language

Same underlying experience, framed two ways. The first is what most candidates write. The second is what scores at APS4.

APS3-style (under-claims at APS4)

Assisted with the processing of customer enquiries and supported the team in meeting service targets.

APS4-style (band-appropriate)

Coordinated the daily intake of 80–100 customer enquiries across a team of four, applying triage criteria to identify high-risk cases for immediate escalation. Identified a recurring intake error pattern and proposed a process change that reduced rework by 25%.

Common reasons APS4 applications get rejected

  1. 1Carrying APS3 language unchanged. "Assisted" and "supported" are APS3 verbs — APS4 needs "coordinated", "applied", "identified".
  2. 2Confusing routine with skill. APS4 panels want to know what judgment you bring, not just what tasks you complete.
  3. 3Missing the discretion signal. APS4 work involves making calls within parameters; show that explicitly.
